Sixth Straight WCC Tournament Title

San Diego wins ninth WCC championship in program history

CLAREMONT, Calif. – San Diego claimed its sixth straight WCC Tournament championship and ninth all-time with a dominating 4-1 victory against Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.

The Toreros (20-4) extended their winning streak to six matches and have won 14 of their past 15. USD reached 20 wins for the third time in the past five years.

USD got off to a strong start in doubles with a pair of convincing wins to secure the doubles point. August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov, ranked 51st nationally, earned a dominating 6-0 victory at No. 1. It is the duo's fourth straight victory and they improved to 10-5 in dual matches.

Gui Osorio and Nico Borter sealed the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. The pair won their fifth consecutive match and are 15-6 in dual matches this season.

The Broncos (17-8) struck first in singles play with a victory at No. 6 to level the match at 1-1.

That's all Santa Clara would get, however, as the Toreros reeled off the next three points to win the match.

Holmgren, ranked 110th nationally, made quick work of Jesus Barajas at No. 2, winning 6-4, 6-2. Holmgren improved to 12-6 in dual matches.

Gui Osorio battled for a 7-6 first-set victory then cruised to a 6-1 second-set win to defeat Andrew Gu at No. 1. Osorio extended his winning streak to 14 matches and is 20-3 in dual matches this season.

For the second consecutive season, David Norfeldt provided the WCC Tournament winning point with a 6-2, 6-4, victory at No. 5 against Rob Seby.

The Toreros will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday at 3 p.m. during the selection show on NCAA.com.
