MORAGA, Calif. – Taylor Spence tied the San Diego program record for career hits and the Toreros concluded their season by splitting a pair of games at Saint Mary's on Saturday.
Â
The Toreros (20-29, 4-11 WCC) got great pitching all day with complete games by
Madison Earnshaw and
Delaney Heller. However, USD's offense did not get going until the second game as the Toreros fell in the first game, 2-0, and bounced back with a 2-1 win in the second.
Â
Spence's name is already all over the USD record book but she added it to the top of the hits category, picking up her 232nd career hit to tie Shaunna Collo (1997-2000) for the most in program history.
Â
Earnshaw (5-12) was excellent in the first game, holding the Gaels (14-37, 7-8 WCC) to two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance. She kept Saint Mary's off the board for the first five innings and it was her seventh complete game of the season.
Â
Earnshaw did not get any run support as the Toreros managed just four hits in the game.
Â
Heller (11-11) continued the great day for the Toreros in the second game, limiting the Gaels to one run on 10 hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in her 11th complete game of the season.
Â
The Toreros offense rallied for a pair of runs, which was just enough to secure the win. With runners on second and third with two outs in the third,
Savannah Shields raced home on a wild pitch to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Gaels got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI-double by Dylan Linton.
Â
Sara Silveyra made sure the Toreros season ended with a victory, delivering a two-out RBI-single up the middle in the fifth inning to score
Lauren Kane and put USD up 2-1.
Â
Heller did the rest and kept the Gaels off the board for the remainder of the game to seal the decision.
