Colling Advances in NCAA Championships

Freshman first Torero in second round since 2005

ORLANDO – Solymar Colling became the first San Diego player to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships singles tournament since 2005 by defeating LSU's Eden Richardson in the opening round on Monday morning at the USTA National Campus.
 
No. 58 Colling delivered a resilient comeback effort to knock off the 12th-ranked Eden 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
 
It is the second consecutive victory for Colling against Eden after the two met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when San Diego took on LSU. Colling won the first meeting 6-3, 7-5.
 
Colling will take on Northwestern's Clarissa Hand in the second round on Tuesday. Hand, ranked 39th nationally, defeated Emma Davis of Wake Forest in the first round, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
 
Colling improved her overall singles record to 26-7 overall and has won nine of her last 10 matches.
