SEATTLE, Wash. – San Diego women's tennis participated in its last event of the fall as junior
Charlotte Keitel and sophomore
Hannah Read represented the Toreros, playing in the ITA West Sectional Championships.
In the biggest individual test this fall, Keitel faced off against the singles tournament's No. 1 seed Mayu Crossley of UCLA in the first round of tournament play on the main court. Keitel dropped the first set 4-6, but bounced back tremendously and won the second set 6-1, before ultimately dropping the last set to Crossley, who would ultimately end up going undefeated.
Against another UCLA opponent, Read challenged the singles tournament's No. 6 seed Kate Fakih despite losing in two sets, only dropping the first set on a tiebreaker and losing the second set by three games.
Outside the main draw, Keitel advanced to the semifinal of the consolation bracket.
In the round of 16 she dropped just three games en route to winning in two sets in the first round of qualifying, 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, she won in straight sets with a pair of 6-3 sets, redeeming herself against Stanford's Tianmei Wang who she previously lost to in the ITA All-American Championship Qualifiers first round. In the semifinals, she won the first set before dropping the second set and losing in a match tiebreak to Arizona's Martyna Ostrzygalo, who went on to win in the finals.
That rounds out fall play for the Toreros in 2025 as they will set their sights on spring regular season dual match play beginning early January, with the schedule being released in the coming weeks.
