Toreros Continue Their Best Start in 17 Years

San Diego improved to 5-0 after a 1-0 win over previously-unbeaten UC Davis

SAN DIEGO – Miguel Berry came through with a goal on a free kick in the 74th minute while Matt Wiher registered his fourth straight shutout as San Diego took down UC Davis, 1-0, on Friday at Torero Stadium.

Off to its best start since 2002, USD (5-0-0) staved off UC Davis (3-1-1), which entered the game unbeaten and receiving votes in the national rankings like the Toreros. Berry's strike proved to be the difference in the first loss dealt to the Aggies this season as it came on a free kick eight yards outside the top of the penalty area. The shot bent around a three-man wall of Aggies to find the upper left corner.
Wiher, who has not allowed a goal in 421 consecutive minutes of game action, turned in his WCC-best fourth shutout of the season by making three saves. The redshirt sophomore's crucial saves occurred over a 30-second span early in the first half. A deflection by Marte Formico in the 14th minute was reactively turned away by Wiher and then in the 15th minute, he made another save on a direct shot by Formico.

With the clean sheet, Wiher became the first USD goalkeeper with four consecutive shutouts since 2006.

Offensively, the Toreros had five shots on goal to UC Davis' three. Berry led the team with two shots on net.

The goal for Berry was his fifth of the season, which puts him in the top-10 in the nation. He is also among the nation's top-five in points (13).

The win helped USD improve to 4-0 at home, a place where it has outscored its opponents 8-0.

The Toreros end their long homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they take on Sacramento State.

NOTES
Dating back to last season, USD has not lost a match in nine straight contests.

The current five-game winning streak is the Toreros' longest in a season since 2015 (six in a row).
