OREM, Utah – After a 30-minute lightning delay in the 87th minute, San Diego (4-3-1) and Utah Valley (3-5-1) played into double overtime ending in a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon.
The Toreros started strong in the first half with three shot attempts, all on target.
Bekah Valdez connected with
Madison Louderback in the 14th minute to put San Diego up 1-0. The freshman forward found the back of the net in the top right corner to record her second goal of the season.
Louderback and
Michaela Foster also got shots off in the first, but each was saved by the Wolverines' goalkeeper.
The second 45 began with early shot attempts by Valdez and Louderback that missed just wide.
Katie Lapomarda also looked to connect in the 58th minute, missing just beyond the left post.
In the 71st minute, UVU's Juliana Carter broke through for the Wolverines on a breakaway to place the shot up and over a sliding
Amber Michel for the equalizer.
Milan Moses led the way for San Diego's offense in the second half with three shots in the period. Moses looked to connect in the 84th minute on a breakaway, which slipped just out of range of the top right corner.
Rain and lightning plagued the final ten minutes of regulation as the match was forced into a 30-minute delay in the 87th.
In the first overtime period, both teams battled for possession as the Toreros outshot the Wolverines 2-1 in 10 minutes of play. UVU tried to connect three times in the second overtime period but was unable to capitalize.
Michel saw all 110 minutes of action, recording four saves on the afternoon off of 15 shots faced.
The Toreros will continue their road-stretch against Utah on Sunday in Salt Lake City. Kickoff is set for noon (PT).
