USD women's tennis opened it's spring season against the University of Nevada on Friday, sweeping both singles and doubles. 

The day started off with redshirt junior Maria Tyrina and senior Daniela Morales'  6-3 win in the No.1 doubles position. 

The freshman doubles duo of Elizabeth Goldsmith and Helena Francati made a statement with their 6-0 win over Nevada's Selina Turulja and Anastaysha Gorbacheva.

Sophomore Solymar Colling was sidelined from matches due to injury, but the No. 37 ranked team took her absence in stride. 

Francati dominated her singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and secured the first singles point for the Toreros.

Tensions were high as freshman Torero Elizabeth Goldsmith battled it out with Nevada's Liza Mintusova after initially leading 4-1 at the No. 2 spot. Goldsmith's 6-2, 6-4 victory secured the final point for USD. 

"Heading into our first match of the season we were excited but a bit nervous. Our high energy helped us overcome the nerves and we are happy to get the first win of the season," said assistant coach Nadia Abdala.

The Toreros will travel to Oklahoma next Saturday to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against No.12 Oklahoma State.
