SAN DIEGO – Coming off a close 4-3 win over Fresno State in its season opener, #24 San Diego men's tennis will next compete in the 12th Annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this weekend.
The Toreros take on UCF on Saturday at 9 a.m. to open the two-match weekend, which will be followed by the winner between the Toreros and Knights facing the winner of UCLA and SDSU on Sunday. The consolation match will be on Sunday as well, taking place at 9:30 a.m.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend is a nationwide event featuring 60 teams each in men's and women's tennis that play across 15 host sites. The event is unique because regional sites are determined by a draft in the summer. Selections are made in the order of the final tennis rankings from 2018-19.
The Toreros, who stayed at No. 24 in the ITA collegiate men's rankings this week, were lifted to a win over the Bulldogs last Saturday thanks to singles victories by upperclassmen
August Holmgren,
Joel Gamerov,
Nico Borter and
David Norfeldt. All but Gamerov won in straight sets while Holmgren's triumph was over No. 124 Zdenek Derkas.
