USD Continues to Improve

SAN DIEGO - San Diego swimming and diving faced off against crosstown rival San Diego State for the second time in three weeks on Friday, losing 153-128 in a dual meet at the Aztec Aquaplex.

Despite the loss, the Toreros put up a good showing, with several swimmers beating season and career-best times.

Junior Alex Haitz had a career-best time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.05), beating her previous time by five seconds.

"We had a lot of second-semester best times, so we were pretty happy," said USD head coach Mike Keeler. "We showed a lot of improvement. Haitz's career-best time is definitely a highlight of the meet."

Other career-best times included freshman Abby Blackford's 200-yard freestyle (1:58.78).

Freshman Rachel Hubka's 50-yard freestyle swim of 24.12 gave USD a second-place finish in a critical event and was her fastest competitive time in four meets so far in 2020.

Sophomore Rachel Tucker swam her way into third place of the 1000-yard freestyle (10:52.31), and improved upon her season-best time by 22 seconds.

Overall the Toreros had three top-three finishes in the dual portion of the meet and 17 in exhibition.

Diver Isabel Busyn was the only USD diver to compete against the Aztecs. The sophomore received a score of 234.23 in the one meter dive and 227.03 on the three meter. She had a combined score of 461.26, her highest of the season.

"Isabel competed well against an incredibly hard field," Keeler said.

USD returns to the water on Saturday, February 8 at home against UCSD.
