LOS ANGELES – #24 San Diego men's tennis swept crosstown rival San Diego State on Sunday, 4-0, in the consolation match of the 12th annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Toreros (2-1) bounced back from a hard-fought loss on Saturday by winning all but one set in both singles and doubles against the Aztecs (1-3). It was USD's second victory in as many years against SDSU and fourth in the last five.
"I thought the boys backed up a solid performance Saturday with another great match today," said USD head coach
Ryan Keckley. "The energy and camaraderie was on point from the start of the match. We took the momentum of capturing the doubles point and carried it into singles play. This team knew how much it means to play and win against San Diego State. It means something to our athletes, to our alumni and to this University. I was proud of them for stepping up and finishing the weekend on a positive note."
All three singles wins for USD were decided in straight sets.
Joel Gamerov won 12 of the 15 games (6-2, 6-1) against Aaro Pollanen at No. 2 to give the Toreros' a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Nico Borter followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Arnaud Restifo at No. 5.
Freshman
Marvin Schaber earned his first collegiate singles win in duals by taking down Rafael Gonzalez Almazan 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
Borter and Schaber, playing together for the second time this season, made quick work of Jan Kirchhoff and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan in doubles by winning 6-0 at No. 2 while Gamerov and
August Holmgren, coming off yesterday's win over the sixth-ranked pair in the country, put away Pollanen and Ignacio Martinez 6-3 at No. 1.
Borter and Schaber improved to 2-0 as a pair this season.
Gamerov, meanwhile, moved to 3-0 in singles.
USD started two freshmen in singles for the first time this year. In addition to Schaber,
Sacchitt Sharrma played at No. 3 and won the first set against Jan Kirchhoff 7-5 before going unfinished in the match.
In addition to winning four of the last five, the Toreros have beaten the Aztecs in eight of the last 10 meetings.
The Toreros will have a week of rest before returning to the court on Sunday when they host Washington at the Hogan Tennis Center. First serve is at noon.
