SAN DIEGO – San Diego men's tennis returns home after last week's ITA Kick-Off Weekend and will host Washington on Sunday at noon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
The Toreros, off to a 2-1 start this season, feature two players who are undefeated in singles so far this year:
Joel Gamerov (3-0) and
August Holmgren (2-0). The senior Gamerov has competed twice at the No. 2 spot, including last weekend against SDSU in which he won in straight sets. Holmgren, a junior, had his match going unfinished against the Aztecs at the No. 1 spot, but he has split his time between No. 1 and 2.
USD also started two freshmen in singles for the first time all season when it took on SDSU.
Marvin Schaber earned his first collegiate singles win in dual play by claiming victory at No. 6 against the Aztecs while
Sacchitt Sharrma was up in his match at No. 3 before going unfinished.
This marks the fourth straight season in which the Toreros and Huskies will face off. Last year, USD topped Washington 4-2 in Seattle after falling into a 2-0 hole. Gamerov, Holmgren and
Gui Osorio all grabbed wins in singles to help the Toreros complete the comeback victory.
Washington has opened the season with five wins in its first six matches. The lone loss was to #17 Michigan on January 17. Sunday will be its first match away from home.
