Weekend in Arizona Starts with Loss

USD lost 5-2 to Arizona State in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -  Despite strong singles performances, San Diego women's tennis dropped its road match against Arizona State on Friday afternoon, 5-2.

Freshman Helena Francati and redshirt junior Maria Tyrina claimed the two points for the Toreros (1-3) with wins in singles. Francati won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 while Tyrina outlasted Lauryn John-Baptiste in a tiebreaker 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 4.

The Toreros lost the doubles point and singles at No. 1, 2, 3 and 6.

"Every match is part of our journey towards our goal of developing our confidence to play with the best; we are getting closer every day," said USD head coach Sherri Stephens. "One point here and one point there and this match is much different."

While losing in doubles at No. 2 and 3, the Toreros were up at No. 1 before stopping due to the Sun Devils clinching the point. USD's No. 1 pair of Tyrina and Solymar Colling was up 5-4 in its match.

USD fell behind early in singles before rallying back to bring a few matches to a close conclusion. No. 39 Colling conceded 2-6 in her first set against fellow top-50 ranked player Ilze Hattingh before rallying to 6-6 in the second before she was finally edged out.

The Toreros will face UNLV in Tempe on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
