SAN DIEGO – San Diego will continue a busy week of nonconference action, traveling to face Cal Poly on Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT in Mott Athletics Center.

The Toreros (0-2) are still looking for their first win of 20-21 after a late comeback fell short against Nevada on Monday night. It will be USD's first meeting with the Mustangs (2-2) since the 2006-07 season.

LAST TIME OUT
-San Diego fell to Nevada (5-2) in its home opener, 79-72, Monday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

- The Toreros trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second half, before storming back on a 21-4 run to take a five-point lead, 57-52, midway through the second period.

Frankie Hughes led the Toreros with 22 points including 16-straight points in USD's second half scoring run.
Joey Calcaterra also reached double digit scoring, finishing with 12 points. San Diego once again struggled offensively, shooting 38 percent from the field compared to 46 percent by the Wolf Pack.

-With the game tied 67-67 with 3:30 to play, the Pack outscored the Toreros 12-5 in the final minutes to hand USD its second loss to start the year.

-Nevada guards Desmond Cambridge and Grant Sherfield finished with 27 and 25 points respectively, including 9-for-16 from three-point range.

Yauhen Massalski and
Vladimir Pinchuk led the Toreros off the glass with six boards each and USD outrebounded Nevada, 37-35. San Diego collected seven second chance points, compared to Nevada's five, but the Pack was strong in the paint, outscoring USD 22-16.

-Massalski added four blocks on the night, bringing his career total to 128 and putting him one shy of fourth-place in San Diego's all-time record book.

ALL TIME SERIES WITH CAL POLY
-Wednesday will be the 17th all-time meeting between USD and Cal Poly. The Toreros trail in the series, 7-9.

-It has been 13 seasons since the two teams met, last facing off on Dec. 9, 2006 in a 72-67 victory for the Toreros. San Diego has won five of the last six meetings, dating back to 1994. The Mustangs' lone victory in that time period came in 1997, an 82-81 finish. The teams first met during the 1957-58 season.
LOOKING AHEAD
-The Toreros are set to take on UC Irvine on Friday, Dec. 19 in Irvine, Calf. The game was originally scheduled for earlier this season and was postponed after USD announced a pause in activities due to COVID-19.

-San Diego's home contest against Long Beach State on Dec. 22 has been canceled after LBSU announced Tuesday a two-week pause of all team activities due to a positive COVID-19 test result within the LBSU program.

-San Diego is still working to reschedule a postponed game against Cal State Fullerton in the month of December.

Yauhen Massalski currently ranks fifth in program history with 128 career blocks and is one shy of fourth place. He is only the fifth Torero to have 100+ blocks in a career, and he has 40+ blocks in each of his first two seasons at USD.

- The Belarus native had a block in 15 of his 20 games in 2019-20. He has at least one block in 62 career games, which are the third-most since 2010-11 by a Torero (source: Sports Reference). Jito Kok (2013-16) had 111 career games with at least one block to lead the program.

JUNIOR DUO LEADS OFFENSE
-Redshirt junior guards
Joey Calcaterra and
Frankie Hughes have put up almost identical numbers through the first two games of the season to lead the Toreros offensively.

-Hughes has the slight edge, averaging 16 points per game, while Calcaterra is averaging 15. Both lead USD from beyond the arc with six three-pointers each—Hughes is 6-for-13, while Calcaterra is 6-for-12—and the two are the only Toreros to reach double-digit scoring in each of San Diego's first two games.
