LOS ANGELES—Redshirt junior
Joey Calcaterra registered 18 points but San Diego fell to UCLA, 83-56 in its season opener on Wednesday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Toreros (0-1) kept things close to start with a strong first ten minutes before a 13-0 run midway through the first half put the Bruins (4-1) in front for good. USD shot 31 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three-point range, led by Calcaterra who finished 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.
In addition to Calcaterra, graduate transfer
Frankie Hughes also reached double-digits, adding 10 points. Calcaterra,
Finn Sullivan and
Marion Humphrey all registered three assists as the Toreros moved the ball well.
Yauhen Massalski finished one point shy of a double-double, with nine points and matched his career-high with 14 rebounds. The senior forward added two blocks and two steals on the night.
The Toreros struggled off the glass and were out-rebounded by UCLA 50-31 including 16 offensive boards for the Bruins. UCLA registered 13 second-chance points, compared to San Diego's six and had 34 points in the paint while the Toreros collected 18.
The teams traded the lead to start, leading up to a 15-15 tie midway through the first period. Hughes led USD early with six points before the Bruins offense caught fire on a 13-0 run to take the lead 33-23 at the half.
Calcaterra paced USD offensively after the break, scoring 15 of his 18 total points in the second half including 3-for-3 from three-point range. However, the Toreros could not keep pace with the high-powered Bruins offense that shot 53 percent down the stretch.
Four of San Diego's nine newcomers registered points in the contest, led by Hughes and graduate transfer
Josh Parrish (6 points, 3 rebounds).
Next up, the Toreros return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for their long-awaited home opener, taking on Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 6 p.m. PT.
