SAN DIEGO – Joel Gamerov,
Sacchitt Sharrma and
Nico Borter each earned straight-set wins in singles on Sunday to lift San Diego men's tennis to a 4-3 win over Washington at the Hogan Tennis Center.
The Toreros (3-1), who improved to 2-0 at home, put away the Huskies (5-2) after capturing the doubles point and making quick work in singles. The match was played out after the Toreros clinched it at 4-1.
"It was great to get a team win today," said USD head coach
Ryan Keckley. "As a coach, you can never emphasize that enough. I thought we played with great identity and conviction in doubles and on a few of the singles courts. On a few others, we allowed Washington to play on its own terms. They are a well-coached team, and if you allow your competition to get comfortable in an uncomfortable setting, then we aren't doing our job and taking advantage of opportunities."
Gamerov moved to 4-0 in singles this season, including 3-0 at the No. 2 position, by winning the match-clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Ewen Lumsden.
Shortly before Gamerov's victory, Sharrma picked up his first collegiate singles win in duals by beating Jack Pulliam 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. It was the second match in a row Sharrma played at the third position.
Borter was the first to give the Toreros a point in singles when he beat Liam Puttergill 6-2, 6-1. The redshirt junior improved to 3-1 in singles.
Borter paired up with
Gui Osorio to hand USD a doubles win at No. 2 by topping Lumsden and Pulliam, 6-2. The Toreros seized the doubles point, their third in as many consecutive matches, when Sharrma and
David Norfeldt won 6-2 against Kailuhia Lam and Kasper Smith at No. 3.
The Toreros next make a trip to the state of Oklahoma for a pair of matches against top-25 opponents. First is at No. 20 Oklahoma State on Friday (5 p.m. PT).
