SAN DIEGO – August Holmgren took down the 19th-ranked player in the country and San Diego men's tennis bounced back from its nearly two-week hiatus with a sweep of Oregon, 4-0, on Saturday at the Hogan Tennis Center.
In a match that had a three-hour delay to its start due to rain, USD (4-3) came out of a tight doubles competition with the point and secured the victory with singles wins in straight sets at the top three positions. No. 102 Holmgren's 6-2, 6-2 over No. 19 Joshua Charlton at No. 1 moved the Toreros into position to clinch by making the score 3-0.
The triumph also snapped Oregon's (9-3) six-match winning streak.
Holmgren and
Joel Gamerov gave the Toreros an advantage with a win in doubles before the two went on to secure their singles matches to give USD a commanding lead. Gamerov was the first to a singles win when he took down Ty Gentry 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 while Holmgren evened his record at the top spot this season to 2-2 with the top-20 victory.
No. 62
Gui Osorio locked up the Toreros' second sweep of the year when he won at No. 2 over Emmanuel Coste 6-2, 6-4. The USD senior overcame an early deficit in the second to take home his first singles win of the dual season.
Junior
David Norfeldt and freshman
Marvin Schaber, playing doubles together for the first time this spring, clinched the doubles point for USD with a 7-5 win over Riki Oshima and Jesper Klov-Nilsson.
In a big ranked matchup, No. 31 Osorio and
Nico Borter were up 6-5 over No. 11 Charlton and Gentry before doubles was completed.
The Toreros quickly get back to the court on Sunday when they host LMU for the WCC opener. First serve is at 12:30 p.m.
