#3 Gonzaga Pulls Away from Toreros

USD dropped its road finale, 94-59

SPOKANE, Wash. – San Diego was unable to slow down #3 Gonzaga's offense on Thursday as the Toreros lost 94-59 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
 
USD (9-21, 2-13 WCC) lost its fourth straight game after it was outshot (52.1% to 38.7%), outrebounded (51 to 27) and outscored in the paint (54 to 22) by the Bulldogs (28-2, 14-1 WCC) in the penultimate regular season game.
 
The Toreros were able to hang with Gonzaga in the first half in shooting as USD was 15-of-32 (46.9%) from the field in the first 20 minutes. However, the Bulldogs outmatched the visiting Toreros by making 20 of their 34 field goal attempts (58.8%) and taking a 12-point lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, USD was outscored 48-25.
 
Joey Calcaterra led the Toreros with 19 points on 8-of-12 from the field, which was his second-best shooting performance of the campaign. The redshirt sophomore had 11 of his 19 points in the second half.
 
Joining Calcaterra in a double-figure scoring were Alex Floresca (11 points) and James Jean-Marie (10 points). The double-digit effort by Floresca was his first in 11 games while Jean-Marie turned in his ninth 10-point contest of the year by shooting 5-of-7 from the field. The five made field goals matched his season-high.
 
Gonzaga had five players in double-figures, led by Filip Petrusev's 21 points.
 
USD shot 46.9% in the first half, only committed five turnovers, and had the game tied at 18-18 with 10 minutes to go. However, it could not slow down the Bulldogs on the other end. The Toreros surrendered 46 points in the first half, which were the third-most allowed by the Toreros in the opening period this season.
 
Gonzaga was 14-of-23 (60.8%) in the paint in the opening 20 minutes as it scored 28 of its 46 points down low. Of the Bulldogs 20 field goals made in the first half, 11 were lay-ups or dunks. Meanwhile, USD had eight points in the paint.
 
The Toreros converted three straight possessions into points a little past midway through the first, including a pair of jumpers by Calcaterra and a spot-up jumper by Jean-Marie that made it 28-24 Gonzaga with seven minutes to go.
 
However, Gonzaga closed out the first half 8-of-11 from the field to take the 12-point advantage into the break.
 
In the second half, the Toreros trailed by double digits for nearly the entire period. The Bulldogs made it a 20-point deficit for USD for the first time at the 14:17 mark while the Toreros were unable to cut it any closer than 15.
 
USD will close out the regular season on Saturday against Pacific in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
 
 
NOTES
The Toreros turned the ball over just nine times, their second straight game with single-digit turnovers. Gonzaga had three turnovers, the fewest by a USD opponent this year.
 
USD's 38.7% field goal percentage for the game was its lowest since February 1 at Pacific (36.2%).
 
Floresca played his most minutes (29) since the WCC opener at LMU on January 2 (34).
 
Floresca also took a 12 shots, matching his season-high (last: November 12 vs. Fresno State).
