SAN DIEGO – San Diego will take the floor at the Jenny Craig Pavilion this weekend for the final time in the 2019-20 season as it will close out the regular season by hosting Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m.
USD has lost four straight entering the last home game of the year and will face a Tigers team that is fourth in the WCC standings and has won seven of their last eight. In the first meeting of the year, the Toreros pulled the game close at Pacific on February 1 but eventually fell 66-58.
Saturday's game can be watched on the WCC Network, with the Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call.
LAST TIME OUT: #3 GONZAGA PULLS AWAY FROM TOREROS
- San Diego was unable to slow down #3 Gonzaga's offense on Thursday as the Toreros lost 94-59 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. USD lost its fourth straight game after it was outshot (52.1% to 38.7%), outrebounded (51 to 27) and outscored in the paint (54 to 22) by the Bulldogs in the penultimate regular season game. The Toreros were able to hang with Gonzaga in the first half in shooting as USD was 15-of-32 (46.9%) from the field in the first 20 minutes. However, the Bulldogs outmatched the visiting Toreros by making 20 of their 34 field goal attempts (58.8%) and taking a 12-point lead into halftime. In the second half, USD was outscored 48-25. Joey Calcaterra led the Toreros with 19 points on 8-of-12 from the field, which was his second-best shooting performance of the campaign. The redshirt sophomore had 11 of his 19 points in the second half.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PACIFIC
- Saturday will be the 23rd all-time meeting between USD and Pacific. The Toreros trail in the series, 8-14.
- In the first meeting of the season, Braun Hartfield scored 27 points and the Toreros were within four with 42 seconds to go, but Pacific staved off USD by making its last five field goals and going 8-of-9 from the free throw line in the last three minutes to win 66-58 on February 1.
- USD has lost five of the last six meetings, but it won the last matchup in San Diego on January 5, 2019 (73-64).
- The Toreros are 6-4 all-time against Pacific at home.
- Since Pacific joined the WCC, USD is 4-8 against the Tigers.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Toreros will venture to the 2020 UCU WCC Basketball Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas March 5-10. USD enters the weekend as the No. 9 seed in the standings, meaning it will play in the 6 p.m. game on Thursday, March 5. The winner of that game moves on to the 6 p.m. second round contest on Friday, March 6.
SENIOR DAY
- Saturday represents the final home game for redshirt senior Alex Floresca. The St. Louis native will be honored before this weekend's game as part of the Senior Day ceremonies.
- A four-year letterwinner, Floresca has played 127 career games as a Torero, including starts in all 30 this year. Since the 2015-16 season, the forward has scored 523 points and hauled in 352 rebounds. He was a key player for the Toreros' 21-win team last year and it was the first squad in program history to reach the NIT. In the season prior, he played in 34 games during the 2017-18 run to the third round of the CIT.
- In his senior season, he has career-highs in starts, minutes per game, rebounds, scoring average and assists.
- In addition to Floresca, student assistant and former forward Jose Martinez and student manager Nick Becerra will be recognized during the Senior Day ceremonies. Martinez will graduate this spring and remain on the USD coaching staff as a graduate assistant next season.
FLO'S FINAL RUN
- Entering his final week of regular season action as a Torero, Alex Floresca will come into the game against Pacific having scored double-digits against #3 Gonzaga on Thursday. The forward had 11 points in 29 minutes, both his highest totals since January 11 vs. Pepperdine (13 pts, 29 minutes).
- Floresca also had five field goals against the Bulldogs, his second-highest total in a game this season and most since December 29 vs. Whittier (6).
- In the last six games, Floresca is shooting 53.3% from the field (16-of-30) and averaging 6.5 points. For the season, he is shooting 39.6%.
JOEY IS HEATING UP
- After one double-digit scoring effort over a six-game stretch in late January through mid-February, Joey Calcaterra has broken out in the last two games by averaging 15.0 points on 56.5% shooting (13-of-23). He is 3-of-5 from three-point range over the stretch as well.
- The redshirt sophomore had 19 points at Gonzaga on Thursday, which matched his conference-high for this year.

- In the last six games, the Toreros have experienced an uptick in their offense as they are outpacing their season averages in field goal percentage and points per game.

TALE OF TWO HALVES
- Braun Hartfield is USD's most important scoring threat and the redshirt junior has proven that in the second half of the WCC schedule as he is averaging 17.7 points on 46.3% shooting (44-of-95) and 36.6% (15-of-41) from three-point range in the last seven games (all in the month of February). He has three 20-point games in the stretch as well as double-digits in six of the seven.
- In the previous eight games - the first eight WCC contests this season - Hartfield averaged 13.3 points on 35.8% shooting (34-of-95).
- In the last seven games, Hartfield is shooting better (46.3%) while also averaging 13.6 field goal attempts. In the eight games prior, Hartfield averaged two less shots (11.9) while shooting below his season average (35.8%). He is shooting 42.8% this year.
- The recent stretch has helped bring Hartfield into the WCC's top-10 for effective field goal percentage. Hartfield's clip of 49.7% is currently 8th in the conference.
- Hartfield has three 20-point efforts in the last seven games. He set a new season-high of 27 at Pacific to start the stretch and then fell one point short of matching it at Pepperdine on February 13 with 26. He has six 20-point games this year, which lead the team.

- He is the 14th different Torero to play 1,000+ minutes in a season since 2009-10 and could be the only Torero to cross that threshold this season. Last year, four different Toreros played 1,000+ minutes: Tyler Williams, Isaiah Pineiro, Isaiah Wright and Olin Carter III.
