SAN DIEGO – Riding a two-match winning streak, San Diego men's tennis is set to play at UC Santa Barbara for its next match on Monday, March 2 at 1:30 p.m.
USD (5-3), which bounced back from a two-match losing streak with its current run, is 7-1 in the last eight meetings against the Gauchos (4-8). The two sides met last season in Santa Barbara, where the Toreros took home a 5-2 win early in the season.
This marks the third year in a row the Toreros and Gauchos have squared off.
The Toreros have been lifted this season by early momentum created by winning the doubles point. With the help of the top pair in
Nico Borter and
Gui Osorio, who are 3-0 in duals this year, USD has gained the doubles point in three straight matches and six of the last seven.
In singles, senior
Joel Gamerov has maintained a perfect 7-0 record across the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions. He has not dropped a set in his last three matches, one of which includes a ranked win over #92 Justin Schlageter of Oklahoma on February 9.
Reigning WCC Singles Player of the Week
August Holmgren took down the nation's 19th-ranked player last Saturday against Oregon and has won two of his last three matches. The only non-win was an unfinished match against LMU when he was at match point before USD clinched the 4-0 victory on another court. Holmgren is 4-2 in singles this year, but he is an impressive 4-1 against ranked opponents.
UC Santa Barbara will face San Diego State on Sunday prior to the match against the Toreros. Entering this weekend, the Gauchos have lost five of their last seven matches but picked up a pair of much needed wins on February 22 and 23 against WCC opponents Pacific (7-0) and San Francisco (6-1).
UC Santa Barbara has faced five WCC teams so far this season, going 1-4 against the conference.
The Gauchos lineup features the nation's 16th-ranked singles player, Joseph Gullin.
