SAN DIEGO – San Diego men's tennis will make its only trip outside the state of California this season with this weekend's matches at #21 Oklahoma State and #25 Oklahoma on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
The Toreros have won back-to-back matches entering their road trip to the Midwest, with victories against Washington and San Diego State. They are 3-1 so far, powered by an unblemished singles record from reigning WCC Player of the Week
Joel Gamerov (4-0).
August Holmgren (2-1) and
Nico Borter (3-1) also hold winning records in singles.
USD faced Oklahoma State last year, taking a 4-3 decision at home in a matchup of two ranked teams (#35 USD, #32 Oklahoma State). A comeback win by Holmgren in three sets against Matej Vocel clinched the resilient win.
Both Holmgren (#58) and Vocel (#35) are currently ranked in the latest Oracle ITA Men's Division I singles rankings.
In addition to Vocel, the Cowboys have two other players ranked in singles: #87 Emile Hudd and #110 Dominik Kellovsky.
While they have three players ranked in singles, the Cowboys also boast the second-ranked doubles pair in the nation (Vocel and Kellovsky) as well as the 19th-best (Hudd and Luke Hammond).
Oklahoma, meanwhile, features two ranked singles players: #71 Mason Beiler and #92 Justin Schlageter.
USD has lost four straight against the Sooners, including the last meeting in 2016 in a neutral site contest in Virginia. Sunday will be the first matchup between the two schools in Norman since 2013 (USD lost 7-0).
The Toreros take on Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. PT/5 p.m. CT on Friday and Oklahoma at 11 a.m. PT/1 p.m. CT on Sunday.
