Comeback Win Completed in Double Overtime

Joey Calcaterra hit the game-tying shot in the final seconds of regulation

SAN DIEGO – Joey Calcaterra scored all 19 of his points in the second half and overtime, including three on a game-tying shot in the final seconds of regulation, to help lift San Diego to an 88-81 double-overtime win over Portland on Saturday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Braun Hartfield scored a game-high 23 points in 48 minutes while Yauhen Massalski had his second double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 12 rebounds as USD (9-17, 2-9 WCC) swept the season series against the Pilots (9-17, 1-10 WCC) and snapped its four-game losing streak.

The Toreros trailed by as much as seven in the second half before working their way out of the hole, culminating with the shot by Calcaterra. After Portland made just one of its two free throws with 13 seconds left in regulation, Marion Humphrey ran the length of the floor before handing the ball off to Calcaterra, who worked his way to the top of the arc and drained a three-pointer to make it 68-68.

The trey by Calcaterra was among his 12 points in the second half. He was 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 from three in the period.

In the first overtime, Hartfield gave the Toreros a 73-70 lead with one of his two three-pointers a minute-and-a-half in, but the Pilots took control with baskets on consecutive possessions that made it 74-73 with two minutes to go. Neither side made their next six combined shots, but Hartfield came through by sinking the back end of his two free throws with 32 seconds left to help send the game into double overtime.

In the final period, the Toreros never trailed thanks to Calcaterra's seven points and the team shooting 3-of-5 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. On the other side, Portland was held to 3-of-8 from the field.

The victory also extended USD's winning streak over Portland to five games.

The Pilots, meanwhile, have lost nine games overall.

The Toreros had their first halftime lead since their conference opener at LMU on January 2, but Portland erased USD's eight-point advantage coming out of the break by making 14-of-20 field goals in the early going of the second half. The Pilots grabbed their seven-point lead at the 7:52 mark when Isaiah White made a lay-up for two of his 15 points.

USD came out of a media timeout, though, with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 57-all with six minutes left. Despite tying it, the Toreros never led in the final minutes of regulation and were only able to tie it five times in the last six minutes.

Toreros forced six steals in the first half and generated nine points off eight Portland turnovers to help carry a 30-22 lead into the break.

Hartfield had 12 points in the first half, boosted by being 5-of-6 from the free throw line, while Massalski chipped in eight points on 4-of-6 field goals in the first 20 minutes.

USD will travel for its next game – but stay in Southern California – as it will play at Pepperdine on Thursday at 8 p.m.
