A productive day at the plate secured the 11-7 victory over the Hawks

SAN DIEGO – San Diego collected 17 hits, including eight doubles in a 11-7 victory over Monmouth on Sunday morning at Fowler Park.

The Toreros (9-2) got their third win in as many days to sweep the Hawks (3-6) in the weekend series. Caleb Ricketts was a standout for the second game in a row for USD, finishing 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Carter Rustad (3-0) turned in another impressive performance on the mound to earn the win for the Toreros. The right-hander went five shutout innings without giving up a hit, and allowing one walk while striking out three. Conner Thurman (4-0) continues to stand out for USD out of the bullpen, adding his first save of the season

The Toreros got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the first inning including an RBI double from Jung-Goldberg.

USD then scored three runs in second frame on a two-RBI double from Luevano and an RBI double from Ricketts which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Toreros.

San Diego kept Monmouth scoreless, retiring nine batters in a row to start the game before building their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the third.

The Toreros got a run-scoring double from Ricketts as part of a three-run frame and added three more in the sixth to make it 11-0.

The USD bullpen struggled a bit as the game went on, giving up seven runs on nine hits but Thurman shut down the rally in the ninth to secure the victory for the Toreros.
