SAN DIEGO – San Diego men's tennis won its fifth match in a row by fighting off Liberty on Wednesday and capturing all seven points in a 7-0 win at the Hogan Tennis Center.
#50 USD (8-3) accelerated to the doubles point and successively captured singles points at No. 1, 5 and 2 to clinch the match against the Flames (8-6) before playing out the remaining singles.
The match was added to the schedule two days ago after the Toreros were left to fill a spot on its slate due to a cancellation by Harvard for next week.
The Toreros bounced back from Sunday's performance in doubles by winning both contests at No. 1 and 3 by a score of 6-4.
Joel Gamerov and
August Holmgren won at No. 1 over Josh Wilson and Goncalo Ferreira to move to 3-2 at the top spot and 5-2 overall.
Joel Gamerov continued his perfect spring season by winning 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) against Chase Burton. The native of Sweden had to battle against Burton in the second after he brought the second set to a tiebreaker. Gamerov persevered and improved to 10-0 in singles with the win, including 6-0 at No. 3.
Both ranked Toreros - #52 Holmgren and #58 Osorio – captured one of the three singles points needed to clinch the match. Holmgren took down Nicaise Muamba 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 for the first singles point while Osorio overcame a lost first set and won 7-6, 6-0 against Wilson at No. 2.
In addition to
Marvin Schaber and
Armin Rostami winning in straight sets at No. 5 and 6, respectively,
David Norfeldt won his singles match 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 after he trailed in the second set 5-2. The win pushed the Swede's record to 4-4 this spring.
Rostami's victory, meanwhile, was his first this season.
The Toreros move on to host the San Diego Shakedown this weekend. USD will face Arizona at 10 a.m. on Saturday while Penn State and Texas Tech will meet at 2 p.m. The winners will play on Sunday for the tournament title.
