An 8K Catch Up with Molly Klein

The junior cross country and track runner shares what she's been up to

Get to know junior Molly Klein as she gets us up to speed with how she's been spending her time, her experiences at USD and more nearly three weeks into the stay-at-home orders issued across California due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

1.     What does your typical day look like right now?
Typically, I wake up at 6:15am and start the day with a little yoga and stretching. Then I'll make some breakfast and attend my virtual classes. In the mid-morning I'll head out for a run (usually around 8 miles), and when I return, I'll chow down on some lunch. Then I'll continue with online classes, meetings, and office hours until it's time to open up my Zoom app and start work as a chemistry/biology tutor. Sometimes, I'll head out for a second run or get some body weight work in. Otherwise, I'll have some dinner, hang out with my two roommates, play some Wii or practice my ukulele skills before heading to bed.

 2.     Where is your current favorite running spot?
One of my all-time favorite places to run is up in Mount Laguna. I can't help but smile when I see the incredible views and inhale the fresh scent of pine needles. As a runner, I also appreciate the elevation and challenging footing as an important part of our training. If you find yourself with a long weekend, Mount Laguna is worth the drive to spend the afternoon hiking, camping, or running (especially running long)!

3.     What is your favorite memory so far running for the Toreros?
Every moment with my teammates is a memory I cherish. That being said, one thing I will always remember is how much fun I have driving back from a hard practice in the team vans, screaming karaoke at the top of my lungs with all of my teammates.

4.     What is your favorite race day meal?
On race day, I'll eat just about anything and everything- oatmeal, eggs, yogurt, sandwiches, chips, you name it! Although I tend to have variety in regard to my race day meals, bananas and peanut butter almost always make the cut.

5.     What songs can be found on your running/warmup playlist?
Music from the early 2000's is our team's anthem, but my all-time favorite pump up song is "Juice" by Lizzo.

6.     Besides your sport and school, how are you passing the time while practicing social distancing?
When we all have the time, I like to challenge my roommates to games like Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, and Mario Kart. I've also been playing my ukulele more often and learning to cook new foods.

7.     How are you keeping in contact with your teammates?
Every Sunday we all Zoom together as a team. It's fun to catch up with the entire team and see how everyone's doing despite being scattered across the country. We also keep in touch through our group chats, group yoga sessions, and individual messages.

8.     What is one thing most people do not know about you?
Most people don't know that before I was a runner, I played basketball. In fact, one of the only reasons I joined my first track team was to stay in shape for basketball.
