WCC Matchups Announced for 2020-21

Toreros will host BYU, Gonzaga and six others

SAN DIEGO – San Diego men's basketball will host Gonzaga, BYU, Saint Mary's and five others in the 2020-21 season while it will play a road-game only against San Francisco as the West Coast Conference announced the 16 conference matchups for all 10 teams on Monday.

In addition to Gonzaga and BYU, the Toreros will play a home-and-away series against LMU, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland and Santa Clara. The contest against the Gaels will be home-only.

Specific dates and times for each game will be announced at a later day after the conference's league schedule is finalized. Conference play begins on Thursday, December 31.

The nonconference schedule for USD will be announced at a later date as well.

The 16-game format is in its third season for the WCC and was adopted by the WCC Presidents' Council as part of the WCC Men's Basketball Enhancement Plan prior to the start of the 2018-19 season. It demonstrates the league-wide commitment by WCC Presidents and Athletic Directors to adopt an innovative approach to advance men's basketball on the national stage as a multiple NCAA Tournament-bid conference.

To determine the matchups, the WCC uses its own formula that includes the 2018-19 and 2019-20 team NET rankings, last year's conference tournament seeds, and a spring survey of the league's 10 head coaches.

The WCC finished the 2019-20 season as the eighth-best conference in the country according to Ken Pom rankings and had three teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament. Half the teams were slotted in the top-110 of the NET rankings.
