Records Fly As Football Defeats Presbyterian, 69-28

CLINTON, SC – Tying the program record for most points in a single game, San Diego football (4-4, 4-1 PFL) ran past Presbyterian (2-5, 0-4 PFL) on Saturday, 69-28.
 
Head Coach Dale Lindsey became the winningest coach in program history, surpassing Brian Fogarty with 72 total victories.
 
Graduate quarterback Mason Randall completed 24-of-29 passes for 242 yards, four total touchdowns, and no interceptions.   
 
Graduate running back Terrence Smith scored three touchdowns in the win, ending with 83 total yards. With 77 all-purpose yards today, senior Emilio Martinez moved into second place all-time (4,539).
 
Freshman wide receiver Vance Jefferson registered two touchdowns on the day, including a 14-yard catch and a 20-yard rush. The Poway High School product totaled 87 yards on eight catches and two rushing attempts.
 
The San Diego defense grabbed four turnovers, including a forced fumble and an interception from junior cornerback Zamir Wallace. Redshirt junior linebacker David Ambagtsheer recovered a blocked punt and walked into the end zone in the third quarter.
 
USD wins its fourth straight game to improve to 4-4 (4-1 PFL), and will return home to face Valparaiso next Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • San Diego drove 68 yards on the first series, but was stopped on a fourth-and-2 on the Presbyterian seven-yard line.
  • On Presbyterian's first offensive play, defensive lineman Mykee Irving stormed to the pocket and forced a fumble that rolled out of the end zone for a safety.
  • Receiving the ball after the safety, San Diego drove 55 yards in nine plays, ending in a three-yard touchdown run from Martinez.
  • After the USD defense forced a turnover on downs, Randall found wide receiver Michael Carner for 17 yards and Martinez for 22 yards to spring forward. On a fourth-and-goal from the one, Randall scored on a quarterback sneak.
  • On a trick play, Wallace forced a fumble as the wide receiver was attempting to throw. Myles Wilson recovered the fumble and on the very next play, Randall found Jefferson for a 14-yard touchdown. Randall found Martinez on a two-point conversion to make it 23-0.
  • Prebyterian answered with a 72-yard touchdown pass on a third-and-7 to get on the board.
  • Randall then launched a 40-yard touchdown down the middle to wide receiver Christian Brown on third-and-8, making it 29-6.
  • A 22-yard touchdown pass from Presbyterian and the subsequent two-point conversion cut its deficit to 29-14.
  • Another turnover on downs gave San Diego the ball on Presbyterian's 12-yard line. On the ensuing offensive possession, the Blue Hose were called for a facemask penalty, and Terrence Smith walked in the end zone on the next play from five yards out. At halftime, USD led 35-14.
  • Presbyterian struck first in the second half with a 58-yard touchdown pass.
  • Vance Jefferson took a direct snap and weaved his way to a 20-yard touchdown to put the Toreros back ahead 43-21.
  • Presbyterian's quarterback attempted a punt midway through the third, but it deflected off of a teammate. Ambagtsheer recovered the fumble and walked into the end zone for another score.
  • Senior Isaac Haney forced a fumble on the next drive, and Michael Hawkins recovered at Presbyterian's 30-yard line.
  •  Maverick Martin picked off a Presbyterian pass and returned it 43 yards down to the opponent's 15.
  • Running back Javon Sturns punched in a five-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 69-28.

  • Lindsey is now 72-25 in his career, including 61-6 in conference play.
  • The last time San Diego scored 69 points was in 1970 against Cal Tech.
  • Martinez scored his first touchdown of the season, and 31st of his career. He continues to climb the record books in multiple categories. Martinez jumped up to second all-time for career all-purpose yards with 4,539. He now ranks third in program history with 26 rushing touchdowns.
  • Over the last three games, Randall has completed 67-of-88 passes (76.1%) for 679 yards, nine total touchdowns, and no interceptions.
  • Smith leads the team with 97 attempts, 425 rushing yards, and three touchdowns.
  • Irving registered his first forced fumble with the Toreros.  
  • With another eight today, Hawkins leads the team with 60 tackles.
  • USD compiled 489 yards of total offense (249 passing, 240 rushing).
  • Carner ended with six catches for 66 yards. He now leads the team with 332 receiving yards through eight games.
  • Brown now has four receiving touchdowns on the year, which leads the Toreros.
  • Six different Toreros scored at least one touchdown.
  • San Diego was 8-13 on third downs.
  • Zamir Wallace registered his third career interception in 19 games. Martin picked off his first career pass.
  • Muhindo Kapapa and Will Buck are tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks this season.
 
UP NEXT
San Diego will welcome Valparaiso next Saturday, October 30 at 1:00 PM PST. USD holds a 20-6 advantage in the all-time series. Valparaiso snapped the Toreros' 14-game winning streak last spring with a 20-19 win.
