SAN DIEGO – August Holmgren of the San Diego men's tennis team won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall National Championship on Sunday, defeating Stanford's Arthur Fery, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Â
The event featured the top 32 singles players in the country, and the No. 3 seed Holmgren earned five straight wins for the title.
"It was a great four days for August," said USD Head Coach
Ryan Keckley. "I thought he played fantastic tennis over the course of the weekend. His confidence has grown from past tournaments, and that propelled him to today's championship. We have to give credit to a really good player in Stanford's Fery, who did some things to disrupt August's rhythm and momentum, but August hung in there and fought. At the end of the day, he came up with some fantastic points down the stretch, which led him to get the win. It was amazing to see so many fans, alumni, scholar-athletes and coaches from other programs come out to support. I'm so proud of his efforts throughout his time with the program. He deserves all the praise he gets because he does everything the right way."
Â
Holmgren caps off a remarkable fall season, winning the ITA championship after making it to the finals at the ITA All-American Championships in October.
The Denmark native is the second Torero to win the ITA Fall National Championship, joining Jose-Luis Nuriega in 1992.
