SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball released its full 2022 schedule today (December 8), as announced by head coach
Brock Ungricht.
The Toreros' schedule features 27 home games and 23 on the road (50 in total), with 27 West Coast Conference matchups plus 23 non-conference contests against some of California and Arizona's most competitive college programs.
USD will begin its season with 11 consecutive home games, which marks the longest homestand to begin a season in program history and the most home contests in a row since the 2011 campaign.
Things will get started for San Diego when Oregon visits Fowler Park from February 18 to February 21 for a four-game set, then USD will continue with play in the Tony Gwynn Classic against UNLV (2/25), Fresno State (2/26), and UNLV again (2/27).
The Toreros will take on Dallas Baptist from March 4-6 before they welcome crosstown opponent UC San Diego at Fowler Park on March 8 for the front end of a two-game home-and-home series that will conclude at Triton Ballpark on April 5.
USD's first road swing of 2022 will come from March 11-12 when San Diego travels to Phoenix, Arizona to play Grand Canyon University at GCU Ballpark.
Other non-conference tilts include home-and-home series with Cal State Fullerton (March 15 at home, April 26 on the road), crosstown rival San Diego State (April 12 at home, April 18 on the road), and UC Irvine (March 22 at home, May 3 on the road).
WCC play is set to begin on March 18 at Pepperdine. Home conference series for the Toreros include hosting Saint Mary's (3/25-3/27), Loyola Marymount (4/14-4/16), Santa Clara (4/29-5/1), and Gonzaga (5/20-5/21), which includes a Saturday doubleheader against the Bulldogs.
Away WCC games include trips to Pepperdine (3/18-3/20), San Francisco (4/1-4/3), Portland (4/8-4/10), BYU (4/21-4/23), and Pacific (5/1-5/8).
San Diego finished the 2021 season 33-12 (19-8 WCC), the best record of any team not to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and a mark that was better than 56 of the 64 teams in the field.
Twenty-three letterwinners are set to return for the Toreros, including 2021 All-WCC Second Team selection
Cody Jefferis, All-WCC Honorable Mention
Ryan Robinson, and
Jack Costello, who was selected to the All-WCC Freshman Team and earned an All-WCC Honorable Mention in addition to being selected as a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American after a standout college debut.
Nine freshman are slated to join USD in 2022, and two transfers have been added as well.
