GREENSBORO, N.C. — San Diego baseball has been recognized for its work in the classroom, earning the 2025-26 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award presented by Sports Attack, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
The Toreros posted a 3.28 cumulative team grade-point average across the 2025-26 academic year, clearing the 3.0 standard required for the honor. To qualify, a program had to be led by a current ABCA member head coach and submit a nomination ahead of the July 17 deadline.
More than 800 high school and college programs earned the award nationally, including more than 500 at the college level and more than 320 in high school. San Diego was one of 133 NCAA Division I programs recognized.
Four Toreros earned 2026 West Coast Conference All-Academic Honorable Mention recognition in May, as Aidan Gonzalez,
Cade Martinez,
Chaz McRoberts and
Connor Meidroth were honored for their work in the classroom alongside their contributions on the field. The league requires a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average for consideration.Â
San Diego's honors extended to the field, where seven Toreros earned 2026 All-WCC recognition. Catcher
Jayden Lobliner led the group, taking West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and keeping the award in San Diego for a third consecutive year.
Lobliner's senior campaign culminated in July, when he and pitcher
Diego Gutierrez heard their names called in the 2026 MLB Draft. The St. Louis Cardinals took Lobliner in the ninth round with the 264th overall pick, and the Baltimore Orioles followed with Gutierrez in the 17th at No. 500.
Both selections came under Ungricht, a two-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year who reached the 150th victory of his San Diego tenure in May. Since taking over the program in 2021, he has guided the Toreros to two WCC regular-season championships, two WCC Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Seventeen San Diego players have earned WCC All-Academic recognition with him at the helm, including four named to the WCC All-Academic Team.
