MORAGA, CALIF. — San Diego baseball (12-3, 1-0 WCC) earned a victory in its first West Coast Conference matchup of the 2021 season on Friday evening, taking down Saint Mary's (10-8, 0-1 WCC) by a 7-0 margin at Louis Guisto Field to earn its ninth consecutive win.
The Toreros were led by strong offensive performances from
Cody Jefferis and
Paul Kunst, with the two players combining for a total of five runs batted in and four runs scored. Jefferis was 3-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Kunst was 4-5 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
USD got the scoring started early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jefferis drove in
Tora Otsuka with a sacrifice fly. The team would double its lead an inning later, making it a 2-0 game after
Camden Vasquez singled to drive in Kunst.
San Diego stayed in control throughout the game, adding four runs across the contest's final four innings via a wild pitch that plated Kunst, Jefferis' first home run of the year (a two-run blast to right field), and a two-RBI single from Kunst.
Otsuka, true freshman
Jack Costello, and Vasquez all finished Friday's contest with multiple hits.
Jake Miller started the game on the mound for the Toreros and went 3 2/3 scoreless innings. The sophomore right-hander allowed just one hit, struck out four, and walked five.
Miller was relieved by true freshman
Ivran Romero (Poway High School), who extended his scoreless innings streak to begin his college career to 15.2 innings after throwing 1.2 scoreless frames. Romero received the win for Friday's game, moving his record to 2-0 on the year.
Romero was followed by redshirt sophomore
Ryan Robinson, who went two scoreless innings before graduate student
Kieran Shaw closed out the game for San Diego with 1.2 run-free frames of his own to finalize the victory for the Toreros.
The 7-0 decision marks USD's third shutout of the season, and the team has now won 12 of its last 13 games.
The series continues tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
