PORTLAND, Ore - August Holmgren won his ninth straight singles match and
Blake Kasday won his third in a row, but San Diego men's tennis (5-6, 2-1 WCC) fell to Portland (7-2, 1-0 WCC) 5-2 on the road on Thursday afternoon.Â
The Toreros lost the first doubles match when Nico Borter and Marvin Schaber were defeated 6-4 on court two. Blake Kasday and Garret Kurtz gave San Diego a chance to win the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court three, but Portland clinched the doubles point with a 7-4 (7-4) win on court one.Â
In singles play, San Diego had chances to take control of the match, pushing four of the matches to three sets but the deficit was pushed to 2-0 when Borter fell 6-4, 6-4. Holmgren, who is currently ranked No. 39 in the country, cut the lead to 2-1 with a 6-2, 7-5 win on court one.Â
The Pilots extended their lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win on court three and clinched the match win a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on court four. Portland earned their fifth point with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) win on court five.Â
Blake Kasday's play was another bright spot for the Toreros as he earned his third straight match win with a 7-6 (71), 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win on court six.
San Diego will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Oregon on the road. The match will begin at noon (PT).
