CLINTON, S.C.—San Diego turned in its second consecutive game with 400+ yards of offense in a 24-21 victory against Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon in Bailey Memorial Stadium.
Â
The Toreros (3-0, 2-0 PFL) recorded 425 yards of offense and ate up 35:00 of clock in their first meeting with the Blue Hose (1-3) who joined the PFL this spring as part of a scheduling agreement. The win does not count towards USD's FCS-record league win streak but does count towards PFL standings.
Â
Mason Randall recorded his second-striaght 300+ yard game, finishing 23-of-34 for 301 yards with two touchdowns.
Emilio Martinez set a new career high with 295 all-purpose yards, rushing 22 times for 124 yards on the ground and hauling in six catches for 75 yards.
Â
Michael Carner finished with 107 yards on nine catches and a touchdown, while
Derek Kline added 58 yards on four catches and another USD touchdown.
Â
Kama Kamaka led the way defensively with eight tackles (six solo), including one tackle for a loss of two yards.
Kyle Bilchik also finished with a team-high eight tackles (four solo), while
Chris Reese recorded San Diego's only interception, adding 0.5 sacks for a loss of 1 yard and a quarterback hurry.
Â
The Toreros got on the board first, when cornerback
Amir Wallace forced a fumble and ran it back for a 23-yard touchdown with 10:26 in the first quarter.
Brandon Eickert tacked on a 23-yard field goal at 3:39 to give USD a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Â
PC answered on the next play with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Thompson to Keith Pearson to make it 10-7, Toreros heading into the second quarter.
Â
The teams traded possessions for much of the second quarter before Chris Reece intercepted a Blue Hose pass on the Presbyterian 34 yard-line to put USD is excellent field position with 25 seconds left in the half. After a 21-yard rush from Martinez put the Toreros in the red zone, Carner capped off the quick drive with a four-yard touchdown reception to put USD up 17-7 heading into the halftime break.
Â
The third quarter remained scoreless until Randall connected with Kline on a 14-yard touchdown strike to give USD a comfortable 24-7 lead.
Â
Presbyterian continued to fight in the fourth quarter, making it a two-score game with 14-yard touchdown pass from Thompson with 11:26 remaining. PC made things interesting with an 80-yard touchdown pass with under a minute remaining to make it 24-21.
Â
However, the Toreros took care of business, recovering the onside kick in the final seconds and ran out the clock for their third victory of the season.
Â
Up next, the Toreros will return to Torero Stadium for a two-game homestand. USD will look to set the FCS record for consecutive league wins when it plays host to Davidson on Saturday at 12 p.m. (PT)
