SPOKANE, Wash- August Holmgren won his 11th straight singles match and
Garrett Kurtz won the clinching match as San Diego men's tennis (6-7, 3-1 WCC) beat Gonzaga (11-6, 0-2 WCC) 4-3 in Spokane on Friday.
The Toreros are just the third team to beat Gonzaga on the road this season.
San Diego fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point but Holmgren evened the score back up with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court one.
"In singles, we got off to a great start capturing 5 of 6 first sets," said head coach Ryan Keckley "The boys bounced back well and capitalized on some early opportunities.August got us on the board and evened the score in typical August fashion."
Blake Kasday pushed the lead to 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 win on court six, but Gonzaga tied the match with a 2-2 with a win on court two.
The teams traded match wins on courts three and four before Kurtz's thrilling 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win on court five clinched the 4-3 win for the Toreros..
"When the moment came to play on his terms, he did," said Keckley. "He took the match finishing three points at the net and put this team on his shoulders. I am really proud of how Garrett handled the the 3-3 situation."
San Diego will be back in action on Tuesday, April 6 as they travel to take on No. 36 UCLA on the road at 2:30 p.m. (PT)
