SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (11-27, 3-8 WCC) battled back in series action to take game two against Santa Clara (7-17, 4-7 WCC) on Saturday afternoon inside the USD Softball Complex.
GAME 1 | San Diego 2, Santa Clara 4 (8 inn.)
The Toreros took Santa Clara to extras in game one and outhit the Broncos, but fell 4-2 in eight innings.
Madison Earnshaw (3-13) started and took the loss in the circle for San Diego. The right-hander went a full eight innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
Sophia Bjerk led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double. Freshman Sofia Delgado provided a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Trailing 2-0, the Toreros first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Delgado brought San Diego within one with a single to left center before Halle Kyler came through with a sacrifice fly to tie it at two.
Earnshaw retired the Broncos in order in the top of the seventh to help push the game to extras. In the top of the eighth, Santa Clara capitalized with a two-run homerun to make it 4-2. San Diego created solid contact in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't pull any closer.
GAME 2 | San Diego 3, Santa Clara 2
The offense immediately responded in game two to take an early 1-0 lead and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-2 win.
Freshman McKenna Braegelmann (6-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for San Diego. The left-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
At the plate, the Toreros were paced by freshman Amanda Limon, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk and an RBI.
The Toreros starting the scoring effort in the second inning as aggressive base running by Delgado paid off. The freshman came across after a delayed steal to third forced an error by the Bronco defense.
Braegelmann and the defense held the Broncos scoreless until San Diego expanded its lead in the fifth inning. Hayley Hensely got aboard with a one-out walk before Clareese Santiago and Lauren Hendrickson loaded the bases. The Toreros capitalized as Limon singled through the right side to make it 2-0 Toreros. San Diego continued to roll in the fifth when Bjerk walked in another run grow the Toreros lead to three. Â
Santa Clara responded in the sixth, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double. Braegelmann shutout the side in the top of the seventh to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Toreros will look to take the series against the Broncos on Sunday with game three slated for noon (PT).
