SPOKANE, WASH. — San Diego baseball (31-12, 17-8 WCC) dropped the first game of its last regular-season series of 2021 on Thursday night, falling by a score of 10-0 to conference rival Gonzaga (33-15, 20-5 WCC) at the Patterson Baseball Complex in what marked the first time USD has been shutout this year. With the win, the Zags clinched the regular-season WCC Championship.
Sophomore
Jake Miller started the game on the mound for the Toreros, allowing a leadoff single before retiring the next 11 batters he faced in a row. His streak was interrupted when Gonzaga's Brett Harris singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, which led to a five-run inning for the Bulldogs after they drew four walks, added three singles, and notched a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Zags moved their lead to 10-0 in the contest's later frames via two home runs and two more singles.
Junior catcher
Shane McGuire led the way for the Toreros at the plate, notching two hits, while seven other USD players recorded hits of their own.
The series continues tomorrow evening. First pitch at the Patterson Baseball Complex is set for 6 p.m.
