BOZEMAN, MONT. — Judd Erickson tossed his first touchdown pass of the season and
Emilio Martinez rushed his way into the USD record books, but San Diego football dropped a 52-10 decision to No. 13 Montana State on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium as the Toreros completed one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in program history.
USD got on the board late in the third quarter when Erickson threw a 19-yard completion to tight end
Michael Gadinis, also marking Gadinis' first score of the year. Erickson, who entered for starting quarterback
Mason Randall (7-17, 41 yards, two interceptions) in the third quarter, was 5-9 with 81 yards, the touchdown, and no interceptions.
Martinez led the way for the Toreros on the ground with 27 total yards, which vaulted him into second place all-time for career rushing yards in USD football history as his 2,823 yards passed Jonah Hodges and Evan Harney's mark of 2,809.Â
Freshman
Ja'seem Reed had USD's longest rushing play of the day at 15 yards, while
Christian Brown, Martinez, and
Michael Carner each recorded receptions of 20 yards or more, totaling 38, 25, and 22 total receiving yards, respectively.Â
On the defensive side of things,
Will Buck notched the Toreros' lone sack of the day, which was good for an 11-yard loss.
David Ambagtsheer and
Amir Wallace each racked up eight total tackles (four solo for Ambagtsheer, five solo for Wallace), Wallace had two pass breakups, and
Cassius Johnson chipped in with a pass breakup of his own.
Kicker
Brandon Eickert punched in USD's second and final score of the day in the fourth quarter, a 28-yard field goal that moved the score to 52-10.
The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, September 25 when they begin Pioneer Football League (PFL) play at Davidson. Kickoff at Richardson Stadium is set for 9 a.m. PST.
