Five Toreros Earn Preseason All-WCC Recognition from Perfect Game

Kyle Carr Selected as Perfect Game WCC Preseason Freshman of the Year

SAN DIEGO — Five Toreros earned recognition on Perfect Game's 2022 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team, the publication announced Wednesday.

Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts, sophomore outfielders Jack Costello and Dustin Allen, and sophomore left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz all earned Perfect Game All-WCC Preseason Team honors, while utility player Kyle Carr was selected as the Perfect Game WCC Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Ricketts was named to the All-WCC Preseason Team in 2021 before he started 43 of San Diego's games, including 35 at first base and eight at catcher. He batted .280 (47-for-168) with 35 runs scored, 13 doubles, two home runs, and 21 RBIs, recorded 14 multi-hit games and a 12-game hit streak, and put together three consecutive three-hit performances on May 7, 8, and 20.

Costello, who was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2021 after a dynamic college debut that saw him bat .338 (53-for-157) with 31 runs scored, 14 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 23 RBIs, and 77 total bases, appeared in 43 of USD's 45 games last season. The Simi Valley, California native did not record an error across 33 starts in left field and one at first base, and put together a remarkable 17 multi-hit games in addition to a 12-game hit streak in 2021. Other accolades for Costello last season included a selection to the All-WCC Freshman Team and an All-WCC Honorable mention.

Allen appeared in 30 of San Diego's games in 2021, starting 13 of them in center field.
The Arcadia, California native batted .293 (12-for-41) with 12 runs scored, three doubles, three RBIs, three walks, and three hit by pitches.

Mautz appeared in 13 of San Diego's games in 2021, making five starts on the mound. The San Diego, California native went 3-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 27 innings pitched, notching 26 strikeouts. Nine of those strikeouts came on March 13, when he tossed five perfect innings versus UC Riverside.

Carr did not play in 2021 due to injury, but has impressed with his versatility and athleticism as he gears up for his redshirt sophomore campaign.

The Toreros will begin their 2022 season on Friday, February 18 at Fowler Park versus Oregon. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
