DENVER, CO – In its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014, the University of San Diego men's soccer team (8-5-6) fell at #9 Denver (14-2-5) in overtime, 1-0.
The Toreros controlled the pace and created multiple chances in the first half, but were forced to play more defensive-minded after being dealt a red card in the 57
th minute.
San Diego shut down Denver and allowed no shots on goal in the second half, but the Pioneers scored just under three minutes into the first overtime period.
USD ends the season with an 8-5-6 record, going undefeated in WCC play and winning its first conference championship in seven years.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mason Tunbridge gathered a ball in the 13th minute and sent a shot from 35 yards out that was pushed over the bar for a corner.
- Rhys Gourdie dribbled through multiple defenders and played ahead to Nicklas Clausen, whose shot hit the crossbar. Cesar Bahena headed the rebound, but a Denver defender earned a team save.
- Denver created a chance on the doorstep on a corner kick, but Jason Dubrovich saved it from crossing the goal line.
- Less than two minutes later, the Pioneers sent a ball ahead for a breakaway, but Dubrovich came up with an acrobatic kick save.
- In the 57th minute, USD was dealt a red card.
- Neither team registered a shot on goal in the second half, and the game went to overtime.
- Three minutes into the first overtime, Denver got on the board. Dubrovich made an initial save, but the Pioneers found the back of the net on the rebound.
- Johnstone and Wiebe each registered shots inside the box after corner kicks, but both went high in the second overtime.
