MALIBU, Calif. — Lights-out relief pitching and another big game at the plate earned San Diego baseball (11-7, 2-1 WCC) a series victory on Sunday afternoon, downing Pepperdine (10-8, 1-2 WCC) by a 6-3 margin at Eddy D. Field Stadium to take two of three from the Waves.
MEIDROTH SPARKS EARLY RALLY
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth got the scoring started for San Diego for the second consecutive game, doubling to left-center field in the top of the third to plate sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen and true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio and make it 2-0 Toreros.
- Sophomore utility player Jack Costello brought in Meidroth with an RBI single to left, then sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) stepped up and delivered his eighth home run of the season, a towering shot over the left field fence that scored Costello and made it a 5-0 game.
- Pepperdine got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of doubles, but Meidroth got one back in emphatic fashion in the top of the ninth, spinning on a low and inside fastball for a solo homer to right, dropping to a knee on his backswing after he hit it before he shrugged his shoulders in disbelief as he rounded third. His fourth round-tripper of the year — a mark that is second to only Sim (eight) — proved to be key in the bottom of the frame as the Waves attempted to launch a comeback.
- One last double from Pepperdine in the bottom of the ninth brought it within three runs, but the home team would get no closer, as sophomore righty Ivran Romero (Poway High School) shut the door to earn his second save of the season and secure his team a 6-3 victory.
A TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
- Redshirt freshman right-hander Ryan Kysar started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in 3.2 innings, scattering five hits as he allowed two runs, struck out two, and walked two.
- Kysar was relieved by redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson, who threw 1.1 scoreless frames, surrendering two hits against a pair of strikeouts.
- Robinson gave way to graduate student Ian Churchill, who turned in the Toreros' most impressive pitching performance of the afternoon. The 6-2 left-hander went 3.2 innings, surrendering just two hits and a run opposite a season-high six strikeouts en-route to receiving his first win of the year to move to 1-2.
- Romero entered in place of Churchill with runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, allowing an earned run (charged to Churchill) on a bloop single before he secured the game's final out.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Meidroth led the Toreros offensively with a 3-for-4 afternoon that featured three RBIs, two runs scored, a home run, a double, and a walk.
- Costello and DeCriscio joined the Manhattan Beach, California native in having a multi-hit performance and both turned in two-hit games.
- Costello was 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and DeCrisicio was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
- DeCriscio has now hit safely in five out of his last six games and is on a four-game hitting streak.
- He has recorded four-multi-hit performances in his last six games and has notched more than one hit in back-to-back-to-back games after putting together a pair of hits in each of the Toreros' first two games at Pepperdine this weekend.
- Sim joined Meidroth as the only USD player to drive in more than one run on Sunday, and Allen was one of five players who came around to score.
