Career Performance From Sim Leads San Diego to Walk-off Win over Dallas Baptist

Sophomore infielder goes 5-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 9-8 comeback victory at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — Behind the performance of a lifetime from sophomore infielder Kevin Sim, San Diego baseball (5-3, 0-0 WCC) stormed back for a walk-off win on Friday night, taking down Dallas Baptist (4-5, 0-0 MVC) by a score of 9-8 at Fowler Park.

Sim (Torrey Pines High School) turned in 5-for-5 evening at the plate with two runs scored, a stolen base, two home runs, and seven runs batted in, setting new career highs in hits, home runs, and RBIs as he went yard for the fourth time in his last three games.

The San Diego, California native homered in the second, singled in the fourth and sixth, homered again in the eighth, then delivered a bases-clearing walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sim got the Toreros out to an early lead in the bottom of the second, plating fellow sophomore Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) with a booming two-run shot off the batter's eye in dead center to move the score to 2-0.
  • The Patriots immediately answered back with three runs in the top of the third, and another in the sixth via a pair of singles and a home run to make it a 5-2 game in favor of the visitors.
  • Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts did some answering of his own in the bottom half of the sixth, sending a two-run shot over the right field wall to bring home junior shortstop Cody Jefferis and bring the Toreros back within one at 5-4.
  • After DBU jumped ahead 7-4 in the seventh with another homer, Sim struck back with a towering two-run shot, sending the second pitch he saw high into the trees beyond Fowler Park's left field wall to again plate Peraza and again bring San Diego within one, this time at 7-6.
  • DBU added some insurance in the top of the ninth when it scored a run on a wild pitch, but it wouldn't be enough.
  • Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth began the frame with his team-leading ninth walk of the season, before Jefferis struck out, then sophomore utility player Jack Costello singled through the left side. True freshman Casey Cummings was then back picked off of first base after pinch running for Costello to bring San Diego to its final out.
  • Ricketts struck out swinging on a wild pitch but hustled up the line to force a throwing error by Dallas Baptist catcher Nate Rombach and reach base.
  • Peraza then walked, setting the stage for Sim to deliver the final blow.
  • The sophomore took the first pitch he saw for a ball, then laced a hard ground ball down the left field line, clearing the bases and bringing home Peraza, Ricketts, and Meidroth to secure the 9-8 comeback win.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sim's five-hit performance matches the program record for knocks in a single game.
  • His seven RBIs on Friday evening are tied for the fourth-most in program history and are the most by a Torero in a single game since outfielder Chris McCready had seven of his own in April of 2019 versus Brigham Young.
  • Both Sim and McCready were shy of the USD single-game RBI record of nine, which was set by current San Diego volunteer assistant coach Ryan Kirby in in March of 2016 versus Loyola Marymount.
  • Both Costello and Peraza notched two-hit games, with Costello going 2-for-5 and Peraza going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk.
  • Costello has now recorded a hit in each of the Toreros' eight games to begin the 2022 season and already has five multi-hit performances under his belt, while Peraza extended his hit streak to four games and achieved his second consecutive game with more than one hit.
  • Ricketts was 1-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and his first round-tripper of the season.
  • Meidroth was 1-for-4 with a run scored and his team-leading ninth walk of the season after batting in the leadoff spot for the first time this year.
  • Sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) threw a scoreless inning in relief, notching his first strikeout of the season in the eighth as he set the Patriots down in order.
  • Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Robinson struck out the side in the top of the ninth to leave the bases loaded before he earned his first win of the season to move to 1-0.
