SAN DIEGO — Redshirt sophomore
Conner Thurman headlined a dominant night on the mound for San Diego baseball, striking out seven batters across three perfect innings out of the bullpen to help the Toreros (6-5, 0-0 WCC) secure a 2-0 victory over crosstown opponent UC San Diego (6-8, 0-0 Big West) on Tuesday night at Fowler Park.
EARLY RUNS GET IT DONE
- The Toreros got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School) drove in sophomore utility player Jack Costello with a groundout to third base.
- Sophomore infielder Kevin Sim doubled the USD lead two batters later when he dashed home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
PITCHING LEADS THE WAY
- True freshman righty Morgan Lunceford began the game with his first career start on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings while surrendering a pair of hits, a walk, and no runs alongside two strikeouts.
- Sophomore right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School) entered in relief of Lunceford in the second and turned in 4.1 dominant innings, allowing just two hits as he struck out five Triton batters.
- Thurman finished the game on the mound for USD, beginning his outing in the seventh with two perfect frames that at one point featured six strikeouts in a row.
- The Mesa, Arizona native worked his way out of trouble in the ninth to secure the 2-0 with for the Toreros, stranding a pair of runners as he earned himself his first save of the year and Romero his first win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Junior Caleb Ricketts made his first start in the outfield on Tuesday night and went a team-best 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
- True freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio made his first start at third base and was 1-for-2.
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth was 0-for-3 but worked his team-best 12th walk of the year.
