SAN FRANCISCO — San Diego baseball (17-9, 6-3 WCC) took a 2-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth but could not hang on to secure the win on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 decision to San Francisco (16-15, 5-4 WCC) at Benedetti Diamond as it concluded its series with the Dons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts got things started in the top of the second when he came in to score on a wild pitch, giving USD an early lead for the third day in a row.
- Sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen doubled the San Diego advantage a batter later with an RBI single, driving in junior outfielder/first baseman Max Jung-Goldberg with an RBI single to right-center field that made it 2-0 in favor of the Toreros.
- San Francisco answered back with a run via an RBI single in the bottom of the third to halve the USD lead, then completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run homer that secured the Dons a 3-2 victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Ricketts led the way for the Toreros with three hits and a run scored, followed by sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth, who was 2-for-5.
- Allen and sophomore utility player Jack Costello were 1-for-4, and sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) and redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez were both 1-for-3.
- Jung-Goldberg tied the game-high with two walks.
- Redshirt freshman Kyle Carr (San Marcos High School) made his college pitching debut for the Toreros on Sunday, throwing a scoreless first inning with a walk and a strikeout.
- Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson tied his career high for innings pitched with 2.2 frames out of the bullpen, setting a new career high with five strikeouts as he held the Dons scoreless.
- Robinson was followed by sophomore right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School), who threw 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings with a walk.
UP NEXT
The Toreros remain on the road next week, traveling to crosstown opponent UC San Diego on Tuesday night before an away WCC matchup at Portland next weekend. First pitch at Triton Ballpark on Tuesday night is set for 6 p.m.
