SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (32-18, 17-10 WCC) split a doubleheader with No. 10 Gonzaga (34-15, 20-7 WCC) on Saturday at Fowler Park to conclude its 2022 regular season schedule, earning an impressive 7-4 win over the Zags in game one before dropping a hard-fought 1-0 decision in game two.
GAME ONE: SAN DIEGO 7, GONZAGA 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the top of the second via an RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly, but sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen quickly provided an answer, plating both sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro in the bottom of the frame with a game-tying two-RBI single through the right side that evened the score at two runs apiece.
- San Diego jumped out to its first lead of the afternoon later in the inning when sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez and sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) plated Allen with a fielder's choice.
- Costello delivered the inning's decisive blow a batter later, ripping a line-drive single into left field to score both Sim and Meidroth and stake San Diego to an early 6-2 lead.
- Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts provided valuable insurance in the bottom of the fourth, driving in junior shortstop Cody Jefferis with a single to right field to make it 7-2.
- Gonzaga struck back with a run in both the eighth and ninth (a solo homer and an RBI double) but would get no further, suffering a defeat by the same score as USD locked up an impressive win over a Top-25 opponent.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Redshirt sophomore righty Ryan Kysar started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in the best start of his young career so far, continuing a month-long trend of success with six innings of two-run, two-hit ball that saw him work around three walks and strike out two enroute to his fourth win of the season to move to 4-0.
- Ricketts, Teijeiro, and Allen all notched two hits in game one on Saturday, with Ricketts recording an RBI, Teijeiro coming around to score a run, and Allen driving in two and scoring once.
- Costello tied the game high with a pair of RBIs alongside a walk, one of six Toreros (Jefferis, Meidroth, Peraza, Vasquez, and Allen) to draw a free pass in the game.
- Each of San Diego's seven runs in game one was scored by a different Torero, with Jefferis, Meidroth, Sim, Teijeiro, Peraza, Vasquez, and Allen all crossing the plate at some point.
- Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson closed the game out on the mound for the Toreros with two thirds of an inning pitched to earn his first save of 2022.
GAME TWO: GONZAGA 1, SAN DIEGO 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gonzaga's Cade McGee plated Tyler Rando with an RBI single to left field in the top of the third inning.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Jefferis and Ricketts recorded the Toreros' lone two hits of game two, doing so in the bottom of the third inning with a single to right field, and in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to center field, respectively.
- Allen led the way for USD with a tied-for-game-high two walks in Saturday's second game, followed by Costello and Vasquez, who each walked once.
- San Diego left eight runners on base in game two including four in scoring position but could not find the big hit it needed.
- Sophomore righty Ivran Romero (Poway High School) started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in 4.0 solid innings, allowing just one run on six hits as he walked one and struck out three.
- Senior right-hander Garrett Rennie was first out of the USD bullpen in game two and set forth three scoreless frames, working around three hits and three walks with a strikeout before he turned the ball over to redshirt freshman lefty Kyle Carr (San Marcos High School), who worked around a hit and a walk with a strikeout of his own to toss a scoreless seventh.
- Appearing in back-to-back games on the same afternoon, Robinson again closed the game out on the mound for the Toreros in the series finale, holding the deficit at just one to give San Diego a chance at a walk-off by stranding a runner at first base after he entered with no outs in the top of the ninth.
