STOCKTON, Calif. — San Diego baseball (30-16, 16-8 WCC) utilized a team effort at the plate and a career outing in relief from Ivran Romero to earn its second sweep of 2022 on Sunday afternoon, taking down Pacific (14-31, 5-16 WCC) by a 12-5 margin to wrap up its series at Klein Family Field in style.
BATS STAY HOT
- Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts got the scoring started in the top of the first with a towering two-run homer, bringing home sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) to make it 2-0 with what marked his second consecutive game with a longball.
- Pacific answered with a round-tripper of its own to take a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the frame, but junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg — whose birthday was on Sunday — hit back with some fireworks of his own, tying the score at three runs apiece with his first career homer.
- The Tigers again answered in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly that made it 4-3, Pacific before San Diego retook its lead in the top of the fifth.
- Ricketts again notched a clutch hit when he tied it at four with an RBI single, then sophomore utility player Jack Costello pushed USD back ahead at 5-4 with another RBI single.
- Graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro then drove in Ricketts with a sacrifice fly before sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen singled to right field to bring in Costello, and by the end of the frame the Toreros led by a 7-4 margin.
- San Diego continued to add on an inning later, plating three via a two-RBI triple (Ricketts and Sim) from Costello and a sacrifice fly (Costello) from junior shortstop Cody Jefferis.
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth followed with the finishing blow in the top of the ninth, delivering a two-RBI double that scored Teijeiro and Jung-Goldberg and made it 12-4 USD.
- The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch but would get no closer, earning San Diego a 12-5 victory over Pacific that secured it a three-game sweep in Stockton.
ROMERO SHINES OUT OF BULLPEN
- Romero, a sophomore lefty who attended nearby Poway High School, turned in a dominant outing out of the bullpen on Sunday afternoon, throwing a career-high 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, walking none, and tying his career-high with seven strikeouts enroute to his third win of 2022 to move to 3-2.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Costello led the way for the Toreros at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, driving in three and coming in to score twice as he tallied a single, a double, and a triple.
- Sim and Ricketts joined Costello in recording a multi-hit game with two knocks apiece.
- Ricketts was 2-for-4 with a single, a home run, a tied-for-game-high three runs scored, a tied-for-game high three RBIs, and a walk, and Sim went 2-for-3 with a single, a double, a tied-for-game-high three runs scored, and a walk.
- Meidroth had two RBIs on Sunday, followed by Jung-Goldberg, Allen, Jefferis, and Teijeiro, who all drove in one.
- Jung-Goldberg scored two runs in the series finale, followed by sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza and Teijeiro, who scored once.
- Allen drew three walks and stole a base, followed by Sim, Ricketts, Jung-Goldberg, and Allen, who all recorded one free pass.
- Meidroth stole his fifth base of 2022, good for a tie for fourth-most on the San Diego roster.
