SAN DIEGO — San Diego swimming and diving completed its first event of the 2022-2023 season on Friday afternoon, a pentathlon meet against San Diego State at the Aztec Aquaplex.
For USD, the event was highlighted by freshman
Penelope Leonard making a splash in her college debut as she posted a team-best 10th-place finish. The New York, New York native posted a total time of 5:12.68 after recording times of 56.96 in the 100 Yard Freestyle, 1:00.30 in the 100 Yard Fly, 1:00.90 in the 100 Yard Backstroke, 1:12.14 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, and 1:02.38 in the 100 Yard IM.
The next-best San Diego finisher was junior
Hannah Hintermeister, who placed 15th with an overall time of 5:20.43.
Freshman
Audrey Gingras set forth a strong debut with a 18th-place finish that saw her post a 5:21.19, closely followed by senior
Callie Johnson at 19th place and 5:23.82.
Senior Mia Schaeffer and
Gigi Zinis rounded out the event's top 25 swimmers with times of 5:28.31 and 5:28.33, respectively.
San Diego's highest finish in any individual event came from senior
Sam Eason, who placed fifth in the 50 Yard Fly with a time of 27.10. Other top-10 USD finishers included freshman
Jane Lloyd in the 100 Yard Fly (6th, 59.14), Leonard in the 100 Yard Backstroke (9th, 1:00.90) and the 100 Yard IM (10th, 1:02.38), Zinis (8th, 25.22) and Gingras (9th, 25.36) in the 50 Yard Freestyle, Gingras in the 50 Yard Fly (9th, 27.51), and Leonard (7th, 28.88) and Gingras (10th, 29.35) in the 50 Yard Backstroke.
The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, October 8 at the Pepperdine Invite.
