Men’s Soccer Battles Back for Another Draw Against UNLV, 2-2

SAN DIEGO – For the second consecutive game, the University of San Diego men's soccer team scored in the last four minutes to earn a draw at home, tying UNLV, 2-2.  
 
After the Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute, USD answered as freshman defender Simon Duus Muller headed home a corner kick from freshman midfielder Kevin Pena just over three minutes later.
 
UNLV took a 2-1 lead into halftime with another goal in the 29th minute. With 87:18 on the clock, freshman midfielder Josh Martinez sent a free kick into the box, where junior defender Trevor Dillon flicked it over the goalkeeper's hands for the 2-2 tie.  
 
USD moves to 1-3-5 on the season, and will travel to Cal Poly SLO on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNLV took an early lead in the 3rd minute, stealing the ball from USD's back line and sending it over the goalkeeper from distance.
  • The Toreros answered five minutes later, as Duus Muller headed home a corner kick from Pena.
  • In the 29th minute, the Rebels took the lead once again. UNLV settled a long ball from midfield and played it across the six for a one-timer.
  • UNLV took the 2-1 lead into halftime, despite USD outshooting the Rebels 13-6.
  • San Diego was awarded a free kick outside of the 18 in the 52nd minute, but Tunbridge's bending left-footed shot sailed just high.
  • With less than three minutes to play Ross Johnstone was fouled dribbling down the right side. Martinez sent a perfect ball inside the 18, where Dillon got a head on it towards the upper left side.

  • San Diego held a 20-8 advantage in shots, including 6-4 on goal.
  • Duus Muller and Dillon each scored their first goals of the season.
  • Martinez now leads the team with two assists. Pena registered his first career point.

The Toreros will play its sixth road match of the season at Cal Poly on Saturday at 5:00 PM. USD holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 3-0 win in 2019.
