SAN DIEGO – Fresh off a career-best performance against Saint Mary's, freshman
Veronica Sheffey has been named the West Coast Conference's Freshman of the Week, as the conference announced on Monday.

The native of Woodinville, Wash., was a key piece of a 2-0 weekend for the Toreros and was particularly impactful in a comeback win against the Gaels on Thursday.

Against the Gaels, Sheffey had one point through the first three quarters, before exploding for 16 points between the fourth quarter and overtime to seal a 69-65 win and finish with a career-high 17 points.

During the fourth quarter, Sheffey scored 10 consecutive points and also secured the game saving block on the Gaels final shot of regulation. The 5'9" guard also notched a career best six rebounds in the victory.

Sheffey also added five points and four assists in her second game of the weekend to help San Diego defeat Pacific, 84-74, on Saturday. Overall, Sheffey averaged 11.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game.

Sheffey is the first Torero to take home a WCC weekly honor since
Sydney Hunter was named Player of the Week on February 14, 2022.

San Diego is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Provo, Utah to face BYU. The game will tip off at 1 p.m. PT and be streamed via BYUtv.
