WACO, TX – In day one of ITA Kickoff Weekend, the University of San Diego men's tennis team was edged by No. 9 Florida State, 4-2. The Seminoles won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Sacchitt Sharrma and
Iiro Vasa earned a 6-3 win at No. 1.
In singles play, freshman
Oliver Tarvet won at No. 2 by a score of 6-3, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, redshirt freshman
Stian Klaassen defeated #53 Jamie Connel, 6-4, 6-4.
"We battled until the end against a top-10 team in very tough conditions," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "I thought we competed extremely well and put ourselves in a position to win 3 hours into the match. As a coach, I love to see our guys be willing to go to the distance with this caliber of team, especially for a group lacking this kind of experience. The fourth quarter just didn't go our way. We need these moments and these opportunities to show the boys that we belong. Now, we just need to continue to believe. We have to find a way to light a fire under us starting matches. This will be our primary focus heading into tomorrow's showdown against a good ASU team."
