Patton Jr. and Turner Lead Toreros Past Le Moyne

San Diego defeats Dolphins 80-71 on Friday night at JCP after erasing early 10-point deficit

SAN DIEGO — San Diego men's basketball (3-1, 0-0 WCC) on Friday night erased an early 10-point deficit to earn a comeback win over Le Moyne (1-3, 0-0 NEC), defeating the Dolphins  80-71 in the Jenny Craig Pavilion behind a game-high 19 points from junior Deuce Turner.

The veteran guard's performance was complemented by a 12-point, nine-rebound performance from freshman Kevin Patton Jr, and nine points apiece from both junior Wayne McKinney III and
freshman Keyon Kensie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early Torero turnovers allowed Le Moyne to create a 10-0 lead at the 16 minute mark in the first half, but a three from Turner combined with an and-one from Patton Jr. ended the San Diego scoring drought and pulled USD within four at 14-10.
  • A beautiful dish from Patton Jr. set up fellow freshman guard Dragos Lungu for an easy lay-up with five minutes to go in the frame, giving the Toreros their first lead of the evening as they moved the score to 28-27 in their favor.
  • USD ended Friday night's first half on a 24-7 run that was fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Turner and senior forward PJ Hayes, giving San Diego a nine-point, 43-34 lead heading into the intermission.
  • Toreros maintained their lead coming out of the break with buckets from Lungu and freshman forward Keyon Kensie.
  • A strong defensive effort combined with more points from Turner headlined the second half for San Diego, allowing it to lead by eight points or more for the entirety of the period before earning a 80-71 comeback win over the Dolphins.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Turner finished the game with 19 points after making five of his nine attempts from beyond the arc, leaving him two points shy of his career high.
  • Patton Jr. was one rebound short of his first career double-double and showcased impressive playmaking ability by gathering three assists.
  • San Diego utilized a deep 11-man rotation on Friday night, with nine different players scoring, and seven recording five points or more.
  • The Torero bench continued to play a factor, against Le Moyne scoring 47 of the team's 80 total points.
