Men’s Soccer Drops NCAA Tournament Heartbreaker to CBU

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program (11-4-4, 5-1-1 WCC) took an early lead but ultimately could not hang on for a victory, falling in penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw with California Baptist (9-5-5, 5-1-2 WAC) in the first round of 2023 NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In front of a tremendous crowd, both teams took the pitch on a cool evening and sought to gain an early footing.
  • San Diego was first to strike, as Simon Duus Muller sent a long through ball to the head of Mason Tunbridge.
  • Tunbridge flicked on a header to Cesar Bahena, who used his speed to power past the out of position defense, before finding the back of the net through the five-hole of the Lancers goalkeeper, making it 1-0 in the 15th minute.
  • However, the Lancers would create a response almost immediately, as Luis Mueller beat Luis Ludosan in the top left corner to tie the game just minutes later.
  • Both sides settled into the game, with defenses locking in and offenses combining for one shot in the remainder of the first half.
  • The Toreros nearly stuck for a go-ahead goal in the 58th minute, as a service into the box found Trevor Dillon, who placed a header on net, but was denied.
  • California Baptist nearly answered just minutes later, as Mueller was denied off a set piece by a diving Ludosan to keep the game level.
  • Some late chances from Tunbridge and Rhys Gourdie would not go and the two sides would head to overtime.
  • Chances were limited in both overtimes, as neither side could generate a shot on goal.
  • Ultimately, the game would head to penalty kicks, where CBU would open with a 2-0 lead.
  • Duus Muller converted his penalty kick in the third round, and CBU missed, which opened the door for the Toreros.
  • Despite a Tunbridge conversion in round four, the Toreros were unable to make a save and fell on penalty kicks.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • San Diego played in front of 1,412 people, good for the highest attendance this season and the highest since Sept. 2, 2019.
  • Ludosan finishes his season with a goals against average of 0.93, which ranks 10th on the Toreros all-time single season record book.
  • The last four NCAA Tournament games and five of the last eight games San Diego has played have gone to overtime.
